Background
Teochew iron rod puppetry is a traditional performing art with a long history in the Chaoshan region. Characterised by its concealed iron control rods and refined hand techniques, the art form integrates craftsmanship, movement, narrative, and ritual performance.
However, in contemporary urban life, iron rod puppetry is increasingly distant from younger generations, often encountered only in formal performances or heritage showcases. The workshop was conceived as a hands-on public education initiative, aiming to reconnect audiences with this tradition through direct bodily experience rather than passive viewing.
Description
The workshop introduced participants to the fundamental structure, mechanics, and performance logic of Teochew iron rod puppetry. Guided by experienced practitioners, participants learned about puppet construction, rod control techniques, and the relationship between hand movement and character expression.
Rather than focusing on theatrical polish, the programme emphasised process and understanding—allowing participants to experience how balance, rhythm, and subtle gestures shape the puppet’s presence. Through guided practice, observation, and discussion, the workshop translated a specialised performance tradition into an accessible learning experience.
The session was conducted in a relaxed, informal setting, encouraging questions, experimentation, and dialogue across age groups and backgrounds.
